BURBERRYS of LONDON
The story of the Trenchcoat

In the 1870s Thomas Burberry created a unique cloth. It was untearable and almost impenetrable by rain, yet was cool, comfortable and virtually creaseproof. This remarkable new cloth, which he called "gabardine", rapidly became the choice of material for discerning sportsmen in the field, on the golf course, by the river, on the ski-slopes and, in the early days of the automobile, on the road. Amundsen, Scott and Shakleton wore gabardine to the South Pole (even their tents were made of gabardine) . Alcock and Brown relied on gabardine during their successful attempt to be the first airmen to fly the Atlantic. Amongst British Offrcers, Burberry gabardine weatherproofs frrst became popular at the turn of the century during the Boer War in South Africa - an innovation which was soon officially sanctioned by the War Office and Admirality.

With the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, Burberry coats were swiftly adapted to the rigours of the new trench warfare. The distinctive 'D' rings were added for attaching grenades to the front and a sword at the back. It was this style which became known as the Burberry Trenchcoat. Such was its popularity, it is estimated that half a-million Burberrys were worn by combatant officers between 1914 and 1918. After the war these officers brought their trenchcoats home and, in doing so, introduced into civilian life what was to become the world's most famous and enduring weatherproof style. In the decades since, the Burberry Trenchcoat has proved itself in every clime from the Poles to the tropics as the perfect coat for the traveller and a classic garment that transcends fashion.
